Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. When she was a little girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word"association. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place suitable for her. Ford was then able to apply for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Apart from her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies, that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
